“Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs. Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will never enter it.”
Luke 18: 16-17
The Gospel of Jesus is powerful. There is no need for fancy productions or lengthy convincing to know that Jesus changes the hearts of people. Our family believes that a relationship with Jesus Christ is the only way to enter Heaven and have true joy and hope on earth. Jesus makes this statement in the New Testament in different ways over and over again: “Verily, Verily I say unto you: He that hears my word, and believeth of him that sent me, will have everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.”
Todd and I grew up in Christian homes and became followers of Christ at young ages. We began our lives learning what it means to live in a way that would be pleasing to the Lord and would show others Christ’s love. We met in 2002 at our church. We discovered we had mutual friends and were active in our church’s college/young adult ministry. We started out as friends but it quickly grew to more and knew early on that we were both what we were looking for in a mate. He lovingly accepted me and my two year old son and we spent about a year getting to know each other. After being engaged for 6 months we were married in my hometown and have been married for 7 years now.
Todd felt a formal calling to ministry in his early teen years. From then he went on to eventually acquire a masters degree in divinity. What does that mean? He went to college to be a preacher. He has spent about the last 15 years serving in some sort of ministry capacity whether the audio visual guy, youth choir assistant, music ministry, outreach, or now as the Student and Young Adult Pastor of our church. Todd loves serving the Lord with all of his heart and gives 100% to anything he does. He is gifted and talented in so many ways, not just preaching the Gospel. He can clean my entire house in 2 hours flat and fix just about anything in the world. He is my wisdom and my sanity when the truth is nowhere to be found. I am blessed the Lord has given him to me.
The Lord has allowed many trials in my life that I now consider a blessing because they have brought me closer to Him. Blessed you say? In other words, He has given me opportunities to live out the Gospel and to show others there is hope in the face of adversity and all this world has to offer. We are born with sin in our hearts and because of sin in this world we are separated from God’s perfect plan for our lives. I have chosen to let what was meant for harm and not the Lord’s plan to be turned and used for good in my life and the lives of others. One major trial the Lord has used is becoming a single mother to a baby boy at the age of 17. This isn’t as big of a deal now days as it was then, but it’s never fun going through fear, heartbreak, disappointment, discrimination, and insecurity, at any age. But God’s word declares in Psalm 34:18 “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted ; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.” God brought me through that time in an amazing way that I could only see after I looked back on it. I also had very supportive parents that helped me through the hard times and was even able to graduate high school and eventually earn a bachelor’s degree as a registered nurse.
Brock is currently 11 years old and although things did not work out between Brock’s father and me, they currently have a good relationship with each other. After Brock was about 2 1/2 years old, the Lord brought me a wonderful guy who I would one day call my husband and my son would one day call Dad. Me and that guy now have two other boys and a crazy busy life in ministry to go along with it. It’s only through God’s grace we have made it through some of the crap stuff we’ve endured. Jesus has done some amazing things in my life and I wake up everyday anticipating his great plans for us. This scripture below has become my staple verse and I read it on my mirror everyday to bring me into reality!
“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.” 2 Corinthians 12:9
